چکیده

Postweaning growth and puberty traits were studied in 965 heifers produced by mating Hereford and Angus cows to Hereford, Angus, Jersey, South Devon, Limousin, Charolais and Simmental sires. Estrus was checked twice daily from 250 to either 480 or 510 days of age and age and weight at puberty were evaluated. Puberty was defined as date of first standing estrus. Charolais, Simmental and South Devon crosses were the heaviest at 400 days of age followed closely by Hereford-Angus and Limousin crosses with Jersey crosses the lightest. Jersey crosses were 16% lighter than Charolais and 8.7% lighter than Limousin crosses at 400 days of age. For percentage of heifers reaching puberty at each 30-day period from 300 to 450 days of age, breed crosses separated into three distinct groups. A higher percentage of Jersey crosses and a lower percentage of Charolais and Limousin crosses reached puberty with HerefordAngus, South Devon and Simmental crosses intermediate throughout this age range. Breed crosses divided into the same three groups on the basis of average age at puberty. Charolais crosses were heaviest at puberty, followed by Limousin and Simmental, then South Devon and Hereford-Angus, with Jersey crosses the lightest. Heifers from Angus dams were 26 days younger and 9 kg lighter at puberty than those from Hereford dams. Heterosis in HerefordAngus reciprocal crosses for age at puberty was 19.5 days with no effect on weight at puberty. (

Physiology and Endocrinology Symposium: Nutritional aspects of developing replacement heifers.

Studies in numerous species provide evidence that diet during development can mediate physiological changes necessary for puberty. In cattle, several studies have reported inverse correlations between postweaning growth rate and age at puberty and heifer pregnancy rates. Thus, postweaning growth rate was determined to be an important factor affecting age of puberty, which in turn influences pre...

Germplasm evaluation in beef cattle--Cycle IV: postweaning growth and puberty of heifers.

Postweaning growth, puberty, and pregnancy traits were evaluated for 783 F1 heifers sired by Angus, Hereford, Charolais, Shorthorn, Galloway, Longhorn, Nellore, Piedmontese, and Salers bulls and out of Angus and Hereford dams in Cycle IV of the Germplasm Evaluation (GPE) Program at the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center. The Hereford and Angus sires included a sample of bulls born from 1982 to 19...

Postweaning growth and reproduction characteristics of heifers sired by bulls of seven breeds and raised on different levels of nutrition.

Heifers produced from sires of seven breeds (Hereford, Angus, Belgian Blue, Piedmontese, Brahman, Boran, and Tuli) and Angus, Hereford, and MARC III (four-breed composite) cows were evaluated. Weaned heifers were placed in three treatment groups of moderate nutrition (15.8 Mcal ME/d), 80% of moderate nutrition (12.6 Mcal ME/d), or fed as a mixed-breed group (16.3 Mcal ME/d). Average daily gain ...

Fort Collins , Colorado HEIFER DEVELOPMENT – THEN AND NOW

Studies in numerous species provide evidence that diet during development can partially control physiological changes necessary for puberty (Frisch, 1984). Energy balance or plane of nutrition influences reproductive performance in heifers and cows (Short and Adams, 1988; Butler and Smith, 1989; Swanson, 1989; Randel, 1990; Robinson, 1990). Numerous studies have reported inverse correlations be...

Postweaning growth and carcass traits in crossbred cattle from Hereford, Angus, Norwegian Red, Swedish Red and White, Friesian, and Wagyu maternal grandsires1,2

The objective of this study was to characterize breeds representing diverse biological types for postweaning growth and carcass composition traits in terminal crossbred cattle. Postweaning growth and carcass traits were analyzed on 434 steers and 373 heifers obtained by mating F1 cows to Charolais sires. Maternal grandsires represented Hereford, Angus, and MARC III (1⁄4 Hereford, 1⁄4 Angus, 1⁄4...
